Family Silver: Highlights from the Liang Yi Collection is a landmark exhibition presenting 150 sets of historic silver from the 18th to 20th century, drawn solely from the Museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition showcases the heritage, design and craftsmanship of this rare metal; explores the lineages of generations of silversmiths; and traces how silverware functions as family heirlooms.
Family Silver is divided into nine sections: lighting; writing; dining; display; toilette; coffee and tea service; alcohol service; vanities; and Asian silver.
Amongst the highlights are an important silver-gilt tray commissioned by Napoleon I during his reign as King of Italy from the celebrated Parisian silversmith Jean-Baptiste Odiot. In addition to numerous other examples of Odiot’s work, the exhibition also includes pieces by famed Parisian master silversmiths such as Cardeilhac, Boivin, Paraud, Tetrad, Guion, Gueyton and Puiforcat
We believe it is the largest private collection of European silver in Asia. Although the collection is craft-focused a large number of the objects have unique and fascinating provenances.
There is also a wide selection of British silver made and influenced by the French Huguenot silversmithing families who relocated to London in the late 17th and late 18th centuries. They brought superior silversmithing techniques as well as distinctly French designs which created a renascence in British silversmithing.
